Commission must have teeth

I REFER to the report “Moving to protect our young” (The Star, Jan 19; online at https://bit.ly/3HMMFan) on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of the imminent establishment of an independent children’s commission for Malaysia.

I have served as a commissioner with the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and the Enforcement Agency and Integrity Commission.Serving in these commissions was a challenging experience. Both were merely advisory and had no power to act on their findings, especially acts of violation discovered through investigations. In fact, both could be labelled as “toothless tigers”.
