With scams on the rise, MCA Youth organises short film competition to raise awareness

SINCE the “Reject Syndicate” campaign was held on March 31, there have been many calls daily from across the nation asking for help, adding to over 100 cases, mostly about their relatives falling prey to human trafficking syndicate, said MCA National Youth chief Datuk Nicole Wong (pic).

Just on April 12, it was through the combined efforts of MCA Youth, the police and Wisma Putra, that 12 Malaysians were successfully rescued from syndicates and returned to Malaysia, while four more who were tested positive for Covid-19 will also be returning after completing quarantine.

She added that in some cases, victims were forced by the syndicate to contact their friends back home to persuade them to come work together, causing them to unsuspectingly fall into the trap. Hence, it is hoped that the short films produced in this competition will raise awareness amongst Malaysian youths to be more careful, and not be enticed by sweet promises of attractive pay and benefits.

Meanwhile, MCA National Youth secretary-general Daniel Wa said, MCA Youth has received reports of various scam tactics, including employment scams, online shopping scams, romance scams, loan scams, etc.

MCA Youth recorded all these reports and information in order to assist the victims in a methodological manner.

He said that, in order to increase Malaysians’ awareness of the tactics employed by these scammers, MCA Youth has decided to organise the “Beware of Scam Short Film Making Competition”.

The competition aims to be a public reminder to be alert and to protect our youths from falling prey to human trafficking syndicates and scammers. Present at the launching of the above competition were MCA National Youth chief Datuk Nicole Wong, MCA Youth Civil Society Movement Coordination Bureau chief Heng Zhi Li, Melaka MCA Youth chief Denis Lee Han Lim, and MCA Youth Central Committee member Tan Jie Sen and Ong Yu Pey.

He also said, only Malaysians are allowed to compete. Scams in Malaysia should be the main theme, i.e. employment scams, online shopping scams, romance scams, loan scams, etc.

The above competition will have 13 prizes in total: RM2,000 for 1st place, RM1,500 for 2nd place, RM1,000 for 3rd place, and 10 special prizes at RM500 each.

The competition details are as follows:

Topic - Various types of fraud or scam cases in Malaysia such as employment scams, online shopping scams, romance scams, loan scams, etc.
