TODAY is the 199th anniversary of Brazil’s independence. On Sept 7, 1822, we decided to end our subordination to the European metropolis.
Just as Malaysian history did not start in 1957, Brazilian history did not start in 1822 or even in 1500, when the Portuguese first arrived. However, like National Day on Aug 31 for Malaysians, Sept 7 is the most important civic celebration in Brazil.
