Fly high the nation’s pride

EVERY Malaysian should honour and respect the Jalur Gemilang no matter what is going on in Malaysia now. Sadly, some refuse to fly the flag as they are disappointed with the current situation in the country.

But the Jalur Gemilang is more than just a piece of cloth – it has an essential message for every Malay-sian. For instance, it stands for the freedom gained when our nation declared independence from Britain on Aug 31, 1957. In the 1970s in my primary school, the flag would be raised as we sang NegaraKu at assembly. Those of us given the responsibility of raising the flag did so with precision so that it reached the top of the flagpole just as everyone finished singing. It always gave me great pride to do this. The feeling is something that I cannot express.
