WHILE driving back home after work recently, I witnessed an accident: a motorcyclist was flung against the divider after being hit by a vehicle.
I was a few cars behind but there was no way my heart would let me drive on after seeing someone so badly injured. So I stopped right in front of the fallen rider to protect him from traffic and immediately called the emergency number. The operator picked up instantly and I requested for an ambulance and police assistance.
The police team arrived immediately. But, unfortunately, the ambulance only arrived after a substantially long period of time – and here is why: Our healthcare system is truly being overloaded by Covid-19 cases. As I stood on the roadside that day, at least half a dozen ambulances passed by, sirens on, attending to emergencies.
The very responsive emergency line operators who attended to my calls that day tried their best but the delay was unavoidable.
With emergency services and the entire healthcare system stretched, we citizens should do our part to ease the situation. We must be extremely careful, especially when we are on road, or, actually, anywhere at all for that matter. We must practice a high level of diligence to keep ourselves and those around us safe. We have an obligation to work together to make our surroundings safer by adhering to laws and regulations and, most importantly, the anti-Covid-19 SOPs.
I salute and thank all the frontliners who attended to the accident victim that day, and also the rest who have been working tirelessly to keep all of us safe.
And I pray for a speedy recovery for the injured rider.
I reached home with a sense of satisfaction, glad that I was in a position to assist someone in need. And I would be even happier if this letter could inspire all of us to make our world a safer place.
Finally, my message is simply this: We must accept the reality of today’s situation and do our part accordingly.
