I ATTENDED the recent online launching of the World Bank Report titled “A Silver Lining: Productive and Inclusive Aging for Malaysia”. The report stated that Malaysia is moving towards an ageing society and that people aged 65 years and above now make up 7.2% of the population.
It also stated that Malaysia will become an aged society in 24 years. By then, those over 65 years of age will make up 14% of the population. If I live long enough, I will be in this elderly group. The report recommended three central policies for Malaysia in its transition to an ageing society – fostering productivity, protecting incomes, and building an inclusive aged care system.
