Lest we forget the hardworking ‘water men’

WATER trickling along the street, gushing out of a burst pipe. This is what I saw recently in my Petaling Jaya neighbourhood. Why? Because pressure was unstable in the water distribution network as supply was restored to the 1.2 million people affected by the Sungai Selangor pollution mishap, I was told (“Sg Selan-gor pollution causes water cut in seven Klang Valley districts”, The Star, Sept 3; online at bit.ly/star_river).

Some 50m from my gate, a pipe had burst. A Syabas (Syarikat Beka-lan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd) team arrived and began work in the early afternoon. Then the rain came. They continued to work, soaked by the downpour, trying to solve the problem of water gushing out of the burst 200mm pipe 1.5m below.
