Send a clear message to schools


THE Education Ministry urgently needs to issue a directive on its stand on cultural festivals in schools after the recent fiasco of the removal of Chinese New Year decorations at one school and the Ponggal festival being labelled religious.

There was a statement by the current acting Education Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, that the Ponggal festival is a cultural event; this was followed by a statement from the ministry saying that the Ponggal celebration should be encouraged in schools.
