Where is the succession plan for police chief?

​I READ with interest the announcement by Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that a decision would soon be made on the replacements for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and deputy IGP as the incumbents are due to retire.

I find it hard to believe that the government is only now considering the replacements for the two top posts in the police force. I have served under many IGPs in my career spanning 38 years and there had always been a smooth transition of power when one retired.

This was basically due to a succession plan that was effectively implemented. There was no second guessing who the new IGP or deputy IGP would be as the succession plan determined the next in line to take over. It would appear that the succession plan has gone haywire or been discarded.

We have the Police Force Commission, with the Home Minister as chairman, which is responsible for the appointment, confirmation, emplacement on the permanent or pensionable establishment, promotion, transfer and exercise of disciplinary control over members of the police force.

Any delay in this matter would not speak well of the police force, which is the main law enforcer in the country.

It is my sincere hope that the succession plan will be executed accordingly to have the best officer to helm our police force.
