I WAS very happy reading “Only the brave teach” (Sunday Star, Jan 14). It reminded me of my early years in a secondary school in Oberhausen, a city in Germany’s Ruhr area, in the 1950s. The treatment was very similar.
Our school apparently specialised in smacking across the cheek. The Geography teacher was always smacking the left cheek and the German and History teachers handed out what we called “double deckers”, hitting both cheeks at the same time.
