Back rules up with tough enforcement

Its against the law to sell cigarettes to children below 18 years old

THE latest government proposal to increase the age limit for buying cigarettes from 18 to 21 years old should be seen as a positive step in our country’s continuous effort to clamp down on underage smokers as well as to stop our youngsters from becoming addicted to smoking.

Recently, Singapore took the same step on the issue, raising the minimum legal age for smoking from 18 to 21. However, the new regulation will be implemented in Singapore over a few years’ period. It covers both the sale to and purchase of tobacco products by those under 21, as well as the use and possession of tobacco products.
