Fight graft on all fronts

TODAY marks World Anti-Corruption Day. It draws focus on a global phenomenon that is eating away at society, be it in the developed economies of the world or in emerging markets. The only difference is the degree to which there is corruption. This is reflected in Transparency International’s yearly corruption rankings.

Malaysia is not spared. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is in overdrive, given the recent arrests of prominent civil servants and GLC senior management. It is indeed shocking when one hears of the sums involved, which either have been seized as cash or as bank balances that have been “frozen” as part of investigations. It is in the millions, reflective both of human greed as well as inflation pursuant to the rapid growth of our economy.
