FORESTS, it seems, have always been the antithesis to economic development. In conventional land use change in this country, the high forests are removed for other uses considered to be of “higher economic value”. But it is no longer justifiable to do so today.

Forests and land are scarce resources now. Under the current circumstances of economic growth, it would be a gross waste of valuable natural resources to clear good standing forests and use the land as capital for development.
