Public universities should generate funds

I REFER to the reports “High cost of varsity degree” (The Star, Oct 27) and “Fees in public universities among lowest in the world” (The Star, Oct 31).

I agree with the secretary-general of the Higher Education Ministry that our public universities have very affordable tuition fees. On the other hand, it is not surprising that the survey referred to by Adrian Chan perceived that the cost of tertiary education in Malaysia is among the most expensive. This is due to the vast number of private tertiary institutions in the country.
