Rooting out child abuse involves the whole community

I AM surprised to read Selangor Health, Welfare, Women and Family Affairs Committee Chairman Dr Daroyah Alwi reportedly saying that the responsibility to monitor and address child abuse lies with the Welfare Department, “State rep: More initiatives needed to curb child abuse” (The Star, Aug 21).

Firstly, Dr Daroyah should know that the rise in child abuse cases is partly due to the success of the reporting system, secondly that the public is reporting because they are aware of the problem and takes the responsibility to report, and thirdly that there are really more child abuse cases.
