The right spelling is George Town

I WOULD like to bring to the attention of your readers, including the columnists for The Star Media Group, that the capital of the state of Penang should always be spelt in two words, “George Town”, and not in a single word “Georgetown”.

“George Town” is the right and official spelling for this first city of Malaysia while “Georgetown” refers to places in the United States, with one being in Washington, D.C. where the Georgetown University is located.

Therefore, all MyKads issued by our National Registration Department need to have the city’s name spelt correctly in two separate words, rather than in a single word currently.

Pos Malaysia, on the other hand, seriously needs to wise up to the fact that the capital of Penang is NOT and NEVER, “Pulau Pinang or Penang”!

I hope the Chief Minister of Penang is aware of this matter as well because there could be no more ignorance than to have George Town as the capital of Penang and yet it is not reflected correctly on her street signs.

It is important to get the basic facts right as George Town has been bestowed the coveted World Heritage Site status by Unesco.
