Caning is pointless, find an effective alternative

I REFER to “Caning won’t be made offence under new child protection laws” (The Star, March 16), and “Have proper SOP on caning students” by Valiatham (The Star, Feb 18).

Valiatham wrote that doctors, lawyers and engineers will tell you they were caned but that did not stop them from being successful professionals. I am a doctor and I was caned when I was in school.
