AWANG Selamat, columnist for Mingguan Malaysia, wrote an article on various predictions made by political observers in relation to the general election. 

According to him, some “soothsayers” believed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad would still lead Barisan Nasional in its election campaign although he was retiring in October, while there were those who said his deputy, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, would take over the reins.
