THE RECENT announcement of a critical allowance for teachers of English, Mathematics and Science will certainly attract more applicants (and hopefully more qualified ones) to major in these fields.

In- service teachers of these subjects might think twice before being lured away by the private sector. Many teachers of other subjects, regardless of their proficiency in the English language, may come forward to offer their services to be eligible for the critical allowance.
