At least 12 dead after migrant boat incident off Gambia

BANJUL, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people have died following a boat incident involving migrants off the coast of Jinack Kajata in The Gambia's North Bank Region, the Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) said Thursday.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the GRCS said its team had recovered 12 bodies as of Thursday, while the number of people missing remained uncertain.

The migrants were reportedly attempting to travel along the Atlantic route, according to the statement, which did not specify when the incident occurred or how many people were aboard the boat.

Red Cross volunteers are helping ensure the dignified handling of the recovered remains and providing mental health and psychosocial support to affected community members, the statement said.

The GRCS said it was working closely with relevant authorities and response partners, with further updates expected as response efforts continue.
