1 killed as unexploded device goes off in E. Afghanistan

KABUL, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A man was killed when an unexploded device left over from past wars went off in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Thursday, provincial police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hemad said Friday.

The victim, a 41-year-old villager, found a toy-like object in Ghani Khel district on Thursday and took it to his residence. The device suddenly exploded, seriously injuring the man, who succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital, the official added.

Urging villagers to avoid touching unknown devices, the official called on people to inform police if they see any suspicious mines or other unexploded ordnance.
