U.S. stocks close higher


NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 423.31 points, or 0.83 percent, to 51,654.95. The S&P 500 added 46.18 points, or 0.59 percent, to 7,811.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 172.83 points, or 0.64 percent, to 27,366.17.

Nine of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with real estate and consumer discretionary leading the gainers by going up 1.88 percent and 1.69 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, communication services and energy led the laggards by losing 0.40 percent and 0.18 percent, respectively.
