NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi reaffirmed the close ties between their two nations during a bilateral meeting at Hyderabad House on Saturday, greeting each other warmly as "my brother."
The high-level talks took place on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, hosted by Modi, on Saturday (Sept 12).
Malaysia is attending the summit in its official capacity as a BRICS Partner Country—a status the nation has held since Jan 1, 2025. This marks Anwar’s second official visit to India, following his inaugural trip as Prime Minister in August 2024.
Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and India, first established in 1957, were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Anwar’s 2024 visit.
India continues to serve as Malaysia’s largest trading partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade reaching RM79.49bil (US$18.59bil) in 2025. Key exports from Malaysia include palm oil, palm-based agricultural goods, and electrical and electronic products, while major imports from India encompass agricultural products, petroleum, and chemicals.
