CAIRO, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Remittances from Egyptians working abroad rose to a record 47.3 billion U.S. dollars in the 2025-2026 fiscal year, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) said Thursday.
The figure marked a 29.6 percent increase from 36.5 billion dollars in the previous fiscal year, the CBE said in a statement.
In June 2026 alone, remittances rose 15.6 percent year on year to about 4.2 billion dollars, up from around 3.6 billion dollars in June 2025, according to the statement.
Remittances, one of Egypt's key sources of foreign currency, have followed an upward trend since March 2024, following the CBE's decision to allow the exchange rate to be determined by market forces.
The measure helped eliminate the parallel foreign exchange market in Egypt, after remittances had declined significantly due to the black market.
There are no official statistics on the number of Egyptians working abroad, but estimates put the figure at more than 10 million, most of whom work in Gulf countries.
