Nepal, India increase cross-border power trade limits

KATHMANDU, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Nepal has secured the ability to export up to 1,650 MW of electricity to India and import up to 1,400 MW through two 400 kV cross-border transmission lines connecting the two countries, Nepal's Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation said on Wednesday.

The two sides agreed on the volume of electricity that can be traded through the cross-border transmission lines during the 13th meeting of the Nepal-India Joint Steering Committee, an energy secretary-level bilateral mechanism, held on Wednesday in Pokhara, western Nepal.

Before the latest agreement, Nepal could export up to 1,100 MW of electricity to India and import up to 1,000 MW, according to the ministry's statement. With the Dhalkebar-Sitamarhi cross-border transmission line nearing completion, the two sides agreed to increase the combined power transfer capacity through the two transmission lines.

The meeting also agreed to expedite work on several new cross-border transmission lines planned for joint development by Nepal and India.
