Spain evacuates 131 people from earthquake-hit Venezuela

MADRID, July 2 (Xinhua) -- An aircraft chartered by Spain's national airline Iberia arrived at Madrid's Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport on Thursday carrying 131 evacuees from Venezuela.

The flight was part of the Spanish government's repatriation operation launched after the devastating earthquake in Venezuela, bringing the total number of evacuees repatriated to 312.

Among those on board were 96 Spanish citizens, 24 Venezuelan nationals and 11 citizens of other European Union countries.

Spain also dispatched another aircraft on Thursday carrying 50 volunteers to set up a field hospital in Venezuela, where they will provide emergency medical care and psychological support.

The deployment follows the dispatch of 54 members of Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME), who flew to Venezuela a day after the June 24 earthquake. The disaster has so far claimed more than 2,000 lives, with the death toll expected to rise further.

The Spanish government on Thursday confirmed that the death toll among Spanish nationals had risen to 27, while another 137 remain missing.
