At least 7 killed in Guinea landslide

CONAKRY, June 8 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed, several others are missing and many more injured after a landslide on Sunday in Siguiri Prefecture in northeastern Guinea, local media reported.

The incident occurred at an artisanal gold mining site that was frequently visited by people searching for precious metals, Guineenews reported.

Search and rescue operations were underway as authorities attempt to locate those still believed to be trapped under debris.

Landslides in the Siguiri region are relatively common, particularly during the rainy season. Such incidents are often associated with artisanal mining activities, which are poorly regulated and lack adequate safety standards.
