More than one-third of Kyrgyzstan's population are minors


BISHKEK, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyzstan has a notably young population, with children aged under 17 accounting for 37 percent of the country's total population, according to data published Monday by the National Statistical Committee.

At the beginning of 2026, the number of children in Kyrgyzstan stood at 2.73 million, with boys and girls accounting for around 51 percent and 49 percent, respectively. Compared to the beginning of 2025, the number of children increased 0.6 percent. Of all children in the country, 63 percent reside in rural areas while 37 percent live in urban areas.

By age group, 38 percent were under the age of 7, 46 percent were between 7 and 14 years old, and 16 percent were adolescents aged 15 to 17.

In 2025, more than 140,000 children were born in Kyrgyzstan, including nearly 72,000 boys and more than 68,000 girls.
