Fire breaks out in densely populated area of Indonesia's Central Jakarta


JAKARTA, June 1 (Xinhua) -- A fire broke out on Monday night in the Kebon Kosong area of Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, sending thick black smoke into the sky and prompting a large-scale firefighting operation, according to local media reports.

The Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency said it received the initial report at around 8:55 p.m. local time and immediately dispatched firefighters to the scene.

Authorities said the fire was still burning late Monday evening, with crews continuing to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings in the densely populated neighborhood. Local residents reported seeing large plumes of black smoke rising above the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No casualties have been reported as of Monday night.
