Trump criticises FIFA's World Cup prices in rare rebuke

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has made a rare critical remark about football governing body FIFA when it comes to ticket prices for June and July's men's football World Cup in North America, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

FIFA has been widely lambasted by fan groups for the high prices, yet Trump has normally sided with the federation's president Gianni Infantino in the run-up to the expanded tournament.

But after being told by the New York Post that tickets to the United States' opener against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles could hit US$1,000, Trump could see the supporters' point.

"I did not know that number. I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn’t pay for it either, to be honest with you," he was quoted as saying on Thursday (May 8).

Infantino had defended the ticket prices this week, saying some World Cup tickets were on offer for less than it costs to see a US college game. — Bernama-dpa
