TBILISI, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Georgia's transport sector is advancing steadily, with growth expected to continue and to strengthen the country's role as a key regional transit hub, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Tamar Ioseliani said Friday.
She said 2025 marked a successful year for cargo turnover, with stable growth momentum continuing into the first quarter of 2026.
Georgian ports handled approximately 4.3 million tonnes of cargo in the first quarter, up around 15 percent year on year, she said.
Container throughput also rose, with about 188,000 20-foot equivalent units processed, marking an increase of about 6 percent.
Ioseliani added that around 750,000 containers were processed in 2025, a roughly 8-percent increase compared with 2024.
She said the government is pursuing infrastructure projects aimed at boosting cargo flows, adding that 2026 has started strongly and may deliver further growth if the current momentum continues.
