Tanzania warns of transport disruptions ahead of rainy season

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's Ministry of Transport on Tuesday warned of potential disruptions to road, rail, air and water transport services during the March-May 2026 rainy season, citing forecasts of above-average rainfall.

In a statement, the ministry said seasonal outlooks indicate that the northern coast, including the Morogoro Region, Coast Region, Dar es Salaam, and the islands of Unguja and Pemba in Zanzibar, as well as parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, are expected to receive average to above-average rainfall.

The forecast also points to increased rainfall intensity in April, with a high possibility of severe weather events.

The ministry noted that the anticipated weather could damage road and railway infrastructure, heighten traffic accident risks, and lead to delays or cancellations of flights and marine services.

The warning comes as the country prepares for the long rainy season, which typically affects logistics operations nationwide.

The ministry urged transport stakeholders, including operators and managers, to take precautionary measures such as monitoring daily forecasts, adhering to safety guidelines, and intensifying infrastructure inspections to mitigate potential flood damage.
