CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sweden maintained its unbeaten run after three round-robin matches in the women's curling competition, while Canada and Switzerland stayed on the top of the men's standings with two wins at the Milan-Cortina Olympic Winter Games on Friday.
Sweden edged Denmark 6-5 with a decisive score in the final end. Switzerland secured its second victory by defeating China 7-5, while South Korea overpowered Britain 9-3. The United States stunned Canada 9-8, marking the first-ever Olympic victory for American women over their Canadian rivals.
"We're quite thrilled. It was a good game and a great battle. We've come close in the past, but it's special to beat the No. 1 team at this stage," said American skip Tabitha Peterson, who is making her third Olympic appearance.
China leveled the score in the sixth end, but Switzerland responded with three points in the seventh and added another in the eighth to take a commanding 7-3 lead. China narrowed the gap but eventually fell short.
"We played very closely in the first half, but we made mistakes in the seventh end and afterward. Switzerland is a very competitive team," said Chinese skip Wang Rui.
South Korea and the United States are currently tied for third place with two wins and one loss, followed by Canada and China at 1-1.
In the men's competition, Canada defeated the United States 6-3 before beating Sweden 8-6 to claim its third consecutive win, moving into joint first place with Switzerland.
Britain, Germany, Italy and Norway all record two wins and one loss, while China, the Czech Republic and Sweden remain winless after three matches.
