MOSCOW, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- A record high daily volume of natural gas demand by Russian consumers was observed on Sunday, reaching 1.767 billion cubic meters, Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom said Tuesday.
High gas consumption has been driven by colder weather across many regions of Russia, Gazprom said, noting that the figure marked the highest daily gas supply ever recorded for February, exceeding the previous record of 1.74 billion cubic meters set on Feb. 1, 2012.
The company also reported that a new historical record for gas supplies was set in January 2026, delivering 51.28 billion cubic meters to domestic consumers.
From Jan. 15 to Jan. 28, gas supplies were maintained at maximum daily levels, exceeding the previous January record of 50.97 billion cubic meters set in 2024, it said.
To ensure stable supplies during this winter, Gazprom created an operational gas reserve of 73.17 billion cubic meters in Russia's underground gas storage facilities, a record level for the country's gas industry.
Russia's Hydrometeorological Center said Monday that a storm warning for abnormally cold weather in Moscow and the Moscow region has been extended until Feb. 6. Chief Russian meteorologist Roman Vilfand warned that daytime temperatures in the capital during working days are expected to be 10 to 13 degrees Celsius below normal.
