U.S. stocks close mixed

NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended mixed on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 408.99 points, or 0.83 percent, to 49,003.41. The S&P 500 added 28.37 points, or 0.41 percent, to 6,978.6. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 215.74 points, or 0.91 percent, to 23,817.1.

Nine of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with technology and utilities leading the gainers by rising 1.42 percent and 1.25 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, health and financials led the laggards by going down 1.66 percent and 0.74 percent, respectively.
