U.S. stocks close lower


NEW YORK, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Wednesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 42.36 points, or 0.09 percent, to 49,149.63. The S&P 500 sank 37.14 points, or 0.53 percent, to 6,926.6. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 238.12 points, or 1 percent, to 23,471.75.

Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and consumer staples leading the gainers by rising 2.26 percent and 1.18 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, consumer discretionary and technology led the laggards by going down 1.75 percent and 1.45 percent, respectively.
