SARAJEVO, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Electricity generation from wind and solar power plants connected to the transmission grid in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) reached 1.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025, doubling year on year, according to data released by the Agency for Statistics of BiH.

Edhem Bicakcic, honorary president of the BiH National Committee of the International Council on Large Electric Systems, said the growth was driven primarily by newly commissioned solar power plants, adding that intensive construction of such facilities is expected to continue through 2026.

Despite declines in electricity output from thermal power plants and hydropower facilities, BiH's total electricity generation in 2025 stood at 14.4 TWh, unchanged from a year earlier. Data from the Independent System Operator in BiH show that the shortfall was offset by the expansion of variable renewable energy sources, largely financed by private capital.

In 2025, BiH exported 7.8 TWh of electricity and imported 5.4 TWh, both down 9 percent year on year. However, the value of electricity exports rose by 30 percent to 870 million convertible marks (KM) (523 million U.S. dollars), while imports more than doubled to 630 million KM. (1 Bosnian convertible mark = 0.60 U.S. dollar)
