Austria hits record summer tourism numbers in May-July period

VIENNA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Austria's tourism sector posted a strong performance this summer, setting a new record for overnight stays in the May-July period, official data showed Wednesday.

"Summer holidays in Austria are booming. The first half of the current 2025 summer season was more successful than ever before," said Thomas Burg, director general of Statistics Austria.

A total of 40.55 million overnight stays were recorded in May-July, marking the highest level ever for the period and surpassing the previous record set in 2024 by 1.3 percent.

Of these, 28.54 million or 70.4 percent were made by international guests, according to the data.

By country of origin, Statistics Austria said visitors from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands drove much of the growth, with increases of 5.9 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively.

In July alone, however, overnight stays declined by 1.3 percent compared with the same month last year.
