Namibia celebrates cultural diversity with WIKA carnival

WINDHOEK, March 29 (Xinhua) -- The streets of Windhoek, Namibia's capital, were alive with vibrant, colorful costumes, music, dance, and people from all walks of life on Saturday as the southern African country officially kicked off the 71st edition of the Windhoek Karneval (WIKA).

WIKA is a 10-day event that celebrates German traditions, music, and national heritage in a carnival atmosphere.

The festivities began with a street procession called "Umzug," which showcased music, dance, and Namibia's rich cultural diversity.

This year's event runs from March 27 to April 6 and features a variety of activities, including the Royal Ball, Prunksitzung (an evening filled with comedy, music, and festive spirit), the WiKa Beer Festival, Children's Carnival, and International Evenings.

Holger Mentzel, president of WIKA, said this year's theme, "Keep Calm, Carry On," highlights the event's importance in fostering cultural exchange and showcasing the country's cultural richness.

"This event transcends mere German tradition; it serves as a vital platform for cultural exchange, celebrates Namibian resilience, and promotes unity among our people," he said.

The event is expected to attract thousands of Namibians and international guests from Germany and other countries, reflecting its global appeal.

Jurgen Hecht, a member of the City of Windhoek Management Committee, described WIKA as an extravagant celebration of cultural splendor and living heritage.

"This event not only showcases a crucial aspect of German culture but also fosters unity within the city. Most importantly, it engages young people, empowering them to take pride in their cultural heritage," Hecht said.

Meanwhile, locals view WIKA as an essential platform for promoting inclusivity and highlighting Namibia's rich cultural diversity.

David Johannes, a resident of Windhoek, attended WIKA for the first time. "I only moved to Windhoek last year, and this is the first time I have fully immersed myself in the German tradition. It allows me to celebrate our nationhood with pride," said Johannes.
