Man arrested in UK after 4 dead in Channel crossing attempt


LONDON, April 10 (Xinhua) -- A man was arrested in Britain on Friday on suspicion of endangering life after four people died when trying to cross the English Channel in a small boat a day earlier, said a statement by Britain's National Crime Agency (NCA).

The 27-year-old Sudanese national was arrested in Kent on suspicion of "endangering another during a journey by sea to the UK" under the new Border, Security, Asylum and Immigration Act, according to the NCA.

Four people died on Thursday after a boat sank offshore near Boulogne-sur-Mer in the northern French region of Hauts-de-France, while attempting to cross the English Channel from France.

The NCA said while 38 people were rescued in the incident and returned to the French shore, 74 sailed on to Britain.

The suspect remains in police custody to be interviewed by officers. Those who made the journey to Britain are also being interviewed, the NCA added.
