Cyclone Garance leaves three dead in La Reunion


PARIS, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities in France's overseas territory of La Reunion confirmed on Friday that Cyclone Garance has caused at least three deaths.

In a statement on its official X account, the prefecture of La Reunion said at least three people had died due to the cyclone.

The cyclone has left some 182,000 households without electricity, 171,000 without water, and 134,000 without internet access, the prefecture added.

According to France's national meteorological service Meteo-France, Cyclone Garance made landfall on La Reunion on Friday, bringing wind gusts exceeding 200 km/h and cumulative rainfall reaching 400 mm.

The cyclone alert was raised to the maximum purple level for several hours on Friday before being downgraded to red. Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors.
