Migrant killed in Sarajevo clash, several arrested

SARAJEVO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A migrant died after being shot during a violent clash between migrant groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH)'s capital Sarajevo on Monday evening, according to local authorities.

The altercation, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. (1600 GMT) in the Ilidza municipality of Sarajevo Canton, quickly escalated, leading to the use of firearms, local police said.

The Prosecutor's Office of the Canton of Sarajevo confirmed that the victim, a young man in his 20s, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a hospital.

The Sarajevo Canton police have launched an investigation led by a duty prosecutor from the Cantonal Prosecutor's Office.

Several suspects have been arrested. However, the identity of the deceased migrant has not yet been made public.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the migrant population in the region, highlighting ongoing tensions among migrant communities in BiH.

In 2023, BiH authorities recorded close to 35,000 irregular arrivals, an increase of 25 percent compared to 2022, according to the International Organization for Migration.
