413 Ethiopians stranded in Djibouti return home

ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti said Wednesday that 413 Ethiopian migrants who were stranded in the neighboring country have returned home in recent days.

The embassy said in a press statement that 164 women and 249 men returned home by land transportation from Djibouti recently, adding that these people had been living in Djibouti as illegal migrants before their rescue.

The embassy warned Ethiopian nationals that they risk sickness, theft, sexual violence and death if they continue using the Djibouti-Yemen route for illegal migration.

It is estimated that thousands of Ethiopians are trafficked to Djibouti every year in transit to reach the Arabian Peninsula. Some of the Ethiopian migrants were subsequently arrested for illegal entry, spending months, and in some cases several years, in Djibouti's prisons.
