1st LD Writethru: Death toll in India's bus mishap rises to 33


NEW DELHI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in Tuesday's bus mishap in India's northern hilly state of Uttarakhand rose to 33 on Wednesday, confirmed a state government official to Xinhua.

Rescue work continued for nearly 24 hours.

Among the dead were 27 men and six women. The victims were going to attend a wedding when the bus they were traveling in fell into a 500-meter-deep gorge on Tuesday evening in Uttarakhand's Pauri Garhwal area.

Eighteen people were injured and have been admitted to a hospital.

"A total of 33 dead bodies, including 27 men and six women, have been recovered from the deep gorge. Rescue work is over," said the government official posted at the district control room.

The cause of the bus mishap is not known yet.
