MANILA (Reuters) - Opponents of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo planned more street protests calling for her resignation on Friday as a sharp rise in prices threatened to add to the damage from election cheating and graft allegations.
An expansion of the country's sales tax, the centrepiece of Arroyo's plans to cut the country's chronic budget deficit, takes effect on Friday, pushing up prices of a wide range of goods and services, including power and fuel.
