QuickCheck: Are scammers posing as a minister's personal assistant on WhatsApp?

MESSAGES are circulating on WhatsApp from individuals claiming to be the personal assistant of Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, the Papar MP and Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister.

One message appears to solicit payments for uniforms, shirts, pants and jackets.

Armizan's parliamentary office in Papar lodged a police report regarding these messages, warning the public that scammers are behind them.

Are scammers really impersonating members of Armizan's staff?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The office said in a Facebook post on Thursday (May 7) that a police report was lodged urging an investigation of the individuals behind these messages.

It warned the public not to be deceived by suspicious messages, calls, or requests, especially those involving financial transactions, requests for assistance or donations, or help with personal matters.

"All official work matters are only conducted in writing through correspondence by the Papar Parliamentary Office or the Minister’s Office, and through duly authorised officers," the post read.

"If you receive any doubtful messages or calls, please ignore them and immediately report to the authorities.

"We kindly ask everyone to help spread this reminder so that more people will not fall victim to cheating or scams."
