WEDDING celebrations are meant to be joyous occasions filled with laughter, music and the promise of new beginnings.
But what happens when the path to happily ever after literally collapses beneath your feet?
Did more than 50 wedding guests in Kelantan really plunge into a river when a suspension bridge gave way?
Verdict:
TRUE
A festive wedding celebration turned into a moment of panic when a suspension bridge suddenly collapsed, causing more than 50 guests to fall into Sungai Chatel Damai at Lata Rek in Kuala Krai, Kelantan, on Thursday (Jan 1).
The incident, which occurred at approximately 2pm, resulted in one man suffering a broken leg after falling onto rocks, whilst a child sustained head injuries and three others experienced minor injuries and breathing difficulties.
Lata Rek village head Mohd Zaki Saari said the incident occurred when the groom's entourage met the bride's guests on the suspension bridge.
"I was informed that during the incident, more than 50 people were using the bridge at the same time," he said when contacted on Friday (Jan 2).
"The groom's entourage from Pasir Puteh wanted to return home whilst the bride's guests had just arrived at the wedding feast," said Mohd Zaki.
He said that as soon as he was informed about the incident, an emergency call was made and four ambulances arrived at the location.
Two ambulances came from Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra whilst the rest came from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force Kuala Krai.
An inspection conducted found that the rope tying the suspension bridge in the cement had deteriorated and needed to be replaced.
Mohd Zaki said all injured victims were taken to hospital and as of Friday, only the man who suffered the broken leg remained admitted for treatment whilst the others had been allowed to return home.
"The Manek Urai State Assemblyman, Fauzi Abdullah, visited the incident site yesterday (Jan 1) afternoon," said Mohd Zaki, adding that work to repair the bridge would start immediately.
