QuickCheck: Was there a shooting at a R&R in Behrang?

THANKS to Malaysia’s gun laws, shootings are a rare occurrence, and when one does happen, it seems to circulate on social media first.

A video of such an incident that made its rounds online was reportedly recorded at a Rest and Service Area (R&R) in Behrang recently.

So was there a shooting at a highway stop in Perak?

VERDICT:

TRUE

The police confirmed that they have detained a man suspected of involvement in a housebreaking case during an incident that went viral at the Behrang R&R southbound on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) on Saturday afternoon (Sept 20).

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin stated that the suspect, who was travelling from the Manjung area towards Kuala Lumpur, was successfully apprehended by members of the Tapah District Police Headquarters during a crime prevention patrol at around 12.30pm, reported Bernama.

He said a chase ensued between the police and an MPV driven by the 35-year-old suspect, from Tapah to the location of the incident.

“The police were forced to fire at the tyres of the vehicle driven by the suspect to stop him.

“They found various tools used for housebreaking, including a police jacket, in the suspect's vehicle.

"It was a good collaboration between the district police, working together as a team, to apprehend the suspect," he said when met after officiating the closing of the Ter..Paling Pahlawan Challenge 2025 program organised by the Hilir Perak IPD at Padang Speedy here on Saturday.

Noor Hisam added that the police were still tracking down two more MPVs believed to be related to the arrested suspect.

"We will be able to solve this case once we arrest the main suspect," he said.

A video went viral on social media showing police officers chasing a suspect driving a stolen vehicle against the flow of traffic before the suspect re-entered the highway.

In the video, gunshots can be heard before police successfully intercepted and stopped the MPV driven by the suspect. Officers pulled the driver out of the vehicle and ordered him to lie down on the side of the road. Following this, the police conducted a search of the suspect's vehicle.
