VERDICT:
TRUE
Police recently detected a viral video of a car being driven against traffic flow at Jalan Masjid Negeri.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police were alerted to the video on March 26, posted on the X platform (previously known as Twitter), showing the car driven in the opposite direction and garnering public attention.
"We have confirmed that the incident happened on March 23 at about 10.50pm, where the car was recorded in a video at Jalan Masjid Negeri," he said in a statement on Thursday (March 27).
ACP Abdul Rozak said an investigation found the car was registered under a 32-year-old woman from Nilai, Negeri Sembilan and was driven by her husband during the incident.
He said the driver claimed he had just started working in Penang and was unfamiliar with the road directions. During the incident, he had inadvertently entered the wrong lane against traffic at Jalan Masjid Negeri.
ACP Abdul Rozak said the police have issued a traffic summons to the driver under Regulation 6(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations 1959 (Rule 10 LN 166/59).
He also advised motorists to plan their journey ahead by using smartphone navigation apps while driving to prevent such incidents that can pose a danger to other road users.
