QuickCheck: Is Bank Islam running a lucky draw with RM1mil grand prize?

Bank Islam Malaysia is supposedly conducting a lucky draw offering a RM1mil grand prize. To sign up, contestants need to click on a website link and register.

Is the lucky draw real?

VERDICT:

FALSE

Kedah police, in a Facebook post on Feb 4, confirmed that no such website was being operated by the bank.

This follows a police report by a victim who had clicked on a link claiming to have been posted by the bank for the lucky draw.

The 42-year-old was told to enter his banking details on the website, including his online banking details.

Not long after that, he then received messages from the bank that five bank transactions had been performed, leading to losses of RM12,200 in total.

"The victim denied ever approving the transaction," state Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Supt Loi Yew Lik said in the statement.

He also urged the public to be cautious regarding such "lucky draws" on social media.
